PYL: How did you get into the business of designing stationery and invitations?
TDW: Lynn & I started this business in 2005. Lynn was a graphic artist with her own ad agency and designed the stamps as gifts for her clients at Christmas. The response was so favorable that she considered launching a line. She called me (we worked together for 5 years in the corporate world) and together we designed the initial line of custom & monogram stamps, along with fold over notes designed to be stamped. We thought we may be on to a unique concept and before we knew it, the orders started coming in fast and furious.

PYL: Where do you draw inspiration for your designs?
TDW: We pay close attention to what is going on in fashion and home decor. Colors and designs translate nicely into stationery and stamps. Also, we are now into our 4th year of business and have learned the taste of our customers.

PYL: What are the distinguishing characteristics of your line?
TDW: We were the first to introduce the concept of custom self-inking stamps. What makes our stamps unique is the sophisticated nature of the designs and the variety of fun, colorful stationery that is designed to be personalized with our stamps.

PYL: Which is your favorite design from your collection?

TDW: Lori’s favorite stamp design – CS3220, Lynn’s favorite stamp design – CS3238

PYL: Which trends should we be watching for in the future?
TDW: Personalized products continue to be incredibly strong and are reaching into new categories. Chocolate brown seems to be color whose popularity never wanes.

PYL: What advice do you have for aspiring paper designers?
TDW: This is an incredibly exciting industry to be in. There is SO much creativity. Our advice would be to make sure you can handle the production side of the business once you launch a line. We started in a 500 square foot office space, which grew to 1,200 and now a 6,500 square foot warehouse.

Our thanks to Lori and Lynn at Three Designing Women. Be sure to check out the selection of Three Designing at PapersyouLove.com. Look for another interview next Thursday in the continuation of our series. Happy 4th of July!
