PYL: How did you get into the business of designing stationery and invitations?
MD: I was a graphic designer for 13 years. I have always made my own holiday and birthday cards for friends and family. I decided to bring a few designs to a local store and “poof” Bella Ink was born.

PYL: Where do you draw inspiration for your designs?
MD: I am always thinking of design, I look at colors, textures, fashion, home decor, nature, people, just about everything inspires me in some way.

PYL: What are the distinguishing characteristics of your line?
MD: I like to mix and match unlikely patterns. Our color pallet is also unique. I believe when you hand draw or paint your designs they have a unique look that can’t be replicated.

PYL: Which is your favorite design from your collection?
MD: I love the yellow clutch invite with the big rhinestone. If it where are real purse I would buy it!

PYL: Which trends should we be watching for in the future?
MD: 60’s & 70’s fashions and colors seem to still be hot. I have seen looks from the 80’s creeping in, but I am not sure any us want to relive that look!

PYL: What advice do you have for aspiring paper designers?
MD: The best advice I can give is to think ahead…if you become successful make sure you are prepared to handle the business side of things! I remember getting my first orders and panicking as I tried to learn quick books and figure out how to generate an invoice. Also, make sure you have a place to grow! Our kitchen pantry turned into envelope storage, our family room was filled with staff, orders, glitter…etc, and our basement was the warehouse for the cards. 12 card designs can quickly turn into 1200! REALLY!

Our thanks to Melissa and the folks at Bella Ink. Be sure to check out be sure to check out the selection of Bella Ink at PapersyouLove.com. Look for another interview next Thursday in the continuation of our series.
